Program for Developmentally Delayed Sexually Reactive Youth
Program Description
The DD-Sexually Reactive Youth Program is designed to meet the needs of children between the ages of 7 to 21 with tested I.Q.s between 50 and 69 who have behaved in sexually reactive ways. The program helps these youth develop healthy boundaries, social and relationship skills, decision-making, coping strategies and self-confidence based on each individual’s cognitive and developmental level. Supervision is provided by mental health professionals 24/7.
Treatment Approach
Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment that takes in to account the youth’s reading level, communication ability, and memory deficits. Palmetto Pee Dee Behavioral Health utilizes the Abel Assessment for Sexual Interest for Developmentally Disabled patients when appropriate. The primary clinical intervention for youth with developmental delays and sexually reactive is cognitive-behavioral therapy with emphasis on psycho-education and therapeutic growth through developmentally appropriate activities in an active, participative, and fun environment.
Therapeutic Interventions
A variety of therapeutic modalities are employed. The primary intervention used is a Cognitive Behavioral approach which is adapted individually to meet the varying abilities and needs of the patients. Treatment is participative, active, and uses multi-sensory techniques to maximize interest and engagement.
